Unique incense holders + all natural incense
We are a 100% family owned business incorporated in Seattle, and our incenseburners are designed in our Shanghai studio, where we spend part of the year.
Minimal and sophisticated: a choice of our three best-selling incense-burners
★★★★★ Rated 4.97/5 based on 47 reviews.
Size:
19 (Diameter) x 5 (H) cm |
7.5 (Diameter) x 2 (H) inches
Color: slate grey
Material: concrete & gold tint stainless steel
Valley of Fog | 迷雾山谷
This modern concrete incense holder (or incense burner) draws inspiration from the misty Chinese mountains. Mountains hold a special place in Chinese history, and for thousands of years people have made pilgrimages there to seek fortune, inspiration, and wisdom. The Valley of Fog holds a cone-shaped backflow incense; the downward flowing plume drifts amongst the peaks of the mountains and the slopes of the valleys, gently setting across the whole landscape.
As our concrete products are individually hand-made, each one will be different. Characteristics such as air bubbles, slight unevenness, minor scratches or bumps were all incurred in the production process and are unavoidable due to the nature of concrete. These are not considered defects unless they affect the functioning of the product.
We recommend gently wiping with a damp cloth shortly after use. Do not rinse directly under water. Metal parts will be very hot during and immediately after burning, care should be taken to avoid injury.
Avoid contact with oily or colored substances as these will stain the concrete.

Size:
12.5 (H) x 9 (Diameter) cm |
4.9 (H) x 3.5 (Diameter) inches
Color: slate grey
Material: concrete, borosilicate glass, aluminum
Karst | 群山
This collection of modern incense burners (or incense holders) is inspired by the terrarium. A glass cylinder encloses each piece, allowing the backflow incense plume to descend onto the concrete formation beneath, uninterrupted by air.
Inspired by the unique clusters of cone-like hills found in Guilin and Zhangjiajie, Karst is a geometric abstraction that conveys the other worldly feel of these landscapes. The incense burner’s plumes dive and billow around the cluster of cones in varying heights, finally gathering at the foot of the mountain to completely obscure it. Then only the peaks remain and the seemingly unfathomable depth of fog that surrounds it.

Cloud Keep | 云庇
This modern concrete incense holder (or incense burner) is part of a series where we try to imagine the essential elements of architecture buried in our collective unconsciousness, comprised of stairs, platforms and towers that recall a place familiar but distant at the same time. This is an architectural folly in miniature, a monument to some forgotten event.
The Cloud Keep is the second in the Cloud series. Ensconced within a golden house, the backflow incense is placed on top of the stairs and its plume flows gently down along the steps and walkways of the burner. Cloud Keep is larger than the Cloud Stairs, and has two striking plume waterfalls, drawing the fog flow in different directions. One waterfall connects to a center platform, which pools the plume, allowing it to overflow in a dreamlike fashion to the stairs below. Also available with a Wutong wood tray.
Only a very small part of architecture belongs to art: the tomb and the monument.

Evening Stroll |傍晚漫步
An Imagined Blend
A refreshing floral blend of our own creation, featuring a garden of jasmine, neroli and bergamot.
As a young child, my grandfather and I went for a walk after dinner every evening. It was a chance to digest, meet neighbors, and check out local happenings. When I think back, I always remember the walk being accompanied by the scent of various flowers, the blend of smells changing as the seasons changed.
The first time I lit this fragrance, I was taken back to those evenings. An elegant, full floral scent drifting through the air.

Evening Stroll is part of the Kin Premium Incense Collection, a collection of incense exclusively hand-made in small scale studios including our own. All incense in the Premium incense collection are enclosed in Wutong wood boxes painted with traditional Chinese red ink.

Palace Rituals |宫中香
A Re-interpreted Blend
Incense was an integral part of Chinese palace life up until the 19th century. Men used incense to aid them in reading, composing poetry, and conducting official business; women used incense as they played music, sang, painted, and conducted “unofficial” business behind-the-scenes. Both carried incense balls on their waists, and had an incense holder permanently lit in their quarters.
This blend is derived from one of the various palace incense recipes recorded in History of Incense《香乘》. It has a base of sandalwood and aloeswood, a rich overlay of native Chinese roots and flowers, rounded off with musk grass and unguis odoratus – the powder of a marine shell dating back to Babylonian incense recipes.
The result is a distinctive warm, earthy scent with a cool, sweet tinge, luring you slowly yet surely into its embrace.

Backflow incense are pretty much what the name suggests – incense where the incense smoke (or plume) flows in the opposite direction as “normal” incense, that is, downwards instead of upwards. Most of the time backflow incense is made in the shape of a cone, witha small, hollow tunnel through the center, ending in a hole at the bottom center. Backflow incense can also be made in the shape of a stick which is completely hollow in thecenter,ie, a long, thin tube.
We were the first website to publish our theory about how waterfall burners work on the internet back in 2019, and we’ve noticed a whole lot of other websites “borrow” our theory since. We’ve never had a physicist verify it, but here it is:
Incense smoke is actually more dense than normal air because it contains tiny hydrocarbons. These are solid particles that should fall downwards because of gravity. However, normal smoke from a fire or typical incense stick actually rises up because warm air is less dense than room-temperature air. This offsets the weight of these tiny particles.
All backflow incense have a hollow center – backflow incense cones have a hole from the bottom through the center, and backflow stick incense are hollow all the way through. So as backflow incense burns, the smoke enters the empty inner tunnel, where it is mixed with normal air and cools down. When this happens, the smoke becomes denser, so when it exits the tunnel at the bottom, it is pulled downwards by gravity. In a normal incense smoke or stick, there is no inner chamber for the smoke to escape to and cool down.
Incense waterfall, incense waterfall burner, incense fountain, incense fountain burner, backflow incense burner, and variations to these names (eg, backflow incense holder) all refer to the same thing. They are all names for a type of incense burner or holder made specifically for backflow incense. Backflow incense cones are also otherwise known as or incense waterfall cones.
In general, incense cones are more difficult to light than incense sticks due to the bigger surface area that needs to be lit, but the same steps apply. You light the tip of the incense with a flame until it catches fire, allow it to burn for a few seconds, then gently fan out the flame, ensuring that a glowing ember remains. This may need to be repeated several times if the first time doesn’t work. For more details, we have a thorough, step-by-step article to guide you.
Once properly lit, place the incense onto the incense holder. Keep the incense and burner on a surface away from wind or sudden air movements (windows, fans, AC, etc), and you should see the smoke flow and fall after 3-5 minutes. Backflow incense burners are visually quite stunning, as it looks like the smoke magically cascades downward.
Incense cones are exactly as the name suggests – coned shaped incense made from incense powder blended with a binder and water, then shaped and dried. The smoke from cone incense rises upwards. Backflow incense is different from this. It typically refers to incense cones that have a hole through the bottom middle center, although backflow incense can also be in other shapes. The smoke from backflow incense flows downwards through the bottom hole, and the video in a previous section demonstrates this.
Like all different types of incense, backflow incense is great to relieve stress – when you want a break in your day, a moment of relaxation. It is most suitable for when you are in the mood for something more visual, rather than accompanying another activity like yoga or meditation. I light up a backflow incense when I want to watch gentle, calming movements.
Incense waterfalls can also be great conversation pieces due to their unique designs and effects. So another good time is when you have a few friends gathered around the coffee table – together you can enjoy the miniature landscapes created by the backflow incense.
Backflow incense cones will burn anywhere from 10-30min depending on the type of incense cone. We list the burn time for each of the incense cones we sell in the product description. In general, our handmade incense cones will tend to burn longer (~25min) than our machine made incense cones (10-15min), this is also true of the handmade incense sticks we sell.
We love and live what we do. We are a Chinese-hyphenated family, and our lives are an eclectic blend of languages and cultures.
We were both first generation immigrant kids. Born in Taipei (Bill) and Chengdu (Miranda), we moved with our families to the US and Australia at the age of 8 and 10 respectively. Through our teens and twenties, we experienced the whole spectrum of emotions typical of immigrants: social exclusion, cultural rejection, identity confusion.
In our twenties, partly in search of our roots, and partly in search of opportunities, we both moved back East, and landed in Shanghai. In this melting pot of a city, which has bridged Chinese and Western cultures for the best part of 150 years, we met, married, and finally came to terms with ourselves.
We embraced the fact that we are inherently full of contradictions: despite our preferred language now being English, here and there we inevitably come across words which we can only express in Mandarin; despite congee and chicken broth being our comfort food, we order just a little too much pizza and chocolate cake day-to-day; despite all of the rejection and confusion we felt in the Western societies that we grew up in, at times this motherland feels so alien that we are truly the foreigners.
When it became obvious that we didn’t belong here, nor where we had grown up; that we are neither American nor Taiwanese, Australian nor Chinese, we saw no other solution than to embrace it. Sure, it sucks to not belong, but it is our eclectic, multi-cultural influences that make us unique, and our lives are all the richer for it.
Over time, we realized that our story is by no means unique. Friends all around us – those from a Chinese background and those not – spoke of similar struggles with identities. The seemingly contradictory pull of the culture and traditions they were born into, and the culture and traditions that they are exposed to as adults. In some way shape or form, this story is the story of all of us.
So that is how we came to the idea of creating Kin | 恳. We wanted to create a range of products that captures the balance and interaction of cultures in their most beautiful form. Objects that are rooted in the richness of Chinese history, yet are global in their relevance.
Inspired by the richness of traditional Chinese culture
Kin draws its inspirations from thousands of years of Chinese history.
Fragrances, or incense, known as 香 (xiang) in Chinese, was treasured in ancient China and first used in the royal palace. The first Chinesebook of fragrances was written as far back as the 5th century.
Re-interpreted with a unique, modern aesthetic
Kin objects showcase minimal designs with clean lines.
Bill Yen, the award-winning architect and designer behind Kin, brings over 15 years of experience. Kin objects are developed from scratch in our Shanghai studio, and are painstakingly designed, re-designed, prototyped and re-prototyped .
A beautiful balance: Acceptance, Calmness
and Belonging
The result are objects that capture the balance of traditional Chinese culture with a modern lifestyle in its most beautiful form.
Kin creates objects for our homes that embrace seemingly contradictory influences in our lives; objects that ground us, accept us, bring us a sense of calm, and give us a sense of belonging.
OUR HOME, YOUR HOME, KIN | 恳
Kin: one’s family and relations | 恳: pronounced “ken” (kěn); earnest and sincere
At Kin | 恳, we re-interpret the unique quirks of traditional Chinese culture for the modern lifestyle.
We are a Chinese-hyphenated family, and we love and live what we do. We understand what it feels like to not quite belong anywhere, and the seemingly contradictory pull of our roots versus our surroundings.
That's why we created Kin, we wanted to create a range of products that captures our contradictions in their most beautiful form, and for these products to be a part of our lives, a part of our homes.
We want you to feel at home, amongst family.
Welcome to Kin, our home, your home. Get to know us.
