Backflow Incense Cones

Backflow Incense Collection | 倒流香系列

The Backflow Incense Collection is so named because the plume of the incense cones flows downwards instead of up. The almost water-like behavior of the plume makes it visually arresting.

There are three incense in the Backflow Collection: New World Sandalwood, Chinese Cedar and Herbal Amalgam.

All of our incense are made from all natural ingredients with no artificial enhancement.

New-world Sandalwood| 澳檀

The sandalwood world is distinguished between old-world and new-world, much like wine. This backflow incense is made from wood sourced from Australia, part of the new-world. In Chinese, it is literally referred to as “new mountain sandalwood” (新山檀), to distinguish it from “old mountain sandalwood” (老山檀), which typically refers to Indian sandalwood.

Just as is the case with wine, new-world sandalwood has its own devoted following. It is milder than its old-mountain counterpart, although more sweet and refreshing. Sandalwood is known to not only calm and relax, but also have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Main Ingredients: Australian Sandalwood, Nanmu powder

Chinese Cedar| 崖柏

Historically the most valued cedar in Chinese incense culture is the Ya Bai (崖柏), or Sichuan Thuja. Ya Bai means “cliff cedar” because the variety usually grows in the cracks of cliff rocks in high elevations. The tree excretes large amounts of resin to support its growth in the harsh environment, and is most desirable as an incense ingredient after it dies naturally and ages for a period in the natural environment. Ya Bai is unfortunately an endangered species today, so this Chinese Cedar incense is made from a related family of non-protected cedars, and has been chosen for a smell that is similar to the Ya Bai.

This Chinese cedar backflow incense has a warm woody yet clean smell.

Main Ingredients: Chinese Cedar, Nanmu powder

Herbal Amalgam| 中药草本

As its name suggests, the Herbal Amalgam backflow incense takes its roots in the herbal preparations used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The practice of TCM dates back thousands of years, and has a strong emphasis on day-to-day practices that enhance balance within the mind and body. For long period of Chinese history, the use of incense and incense blends were considered part of TCM.

This herbal amalgam uses a number of uniquely Chinese and Asian plants. Its classic herbal smell has a minty and floral touch.

Main ingredients:Clove, Wild mint, Chinese Lingxiang, Thick leaf lavender (Paicao), Gansong

HOW TO LIGHT YOUR BACKFLOW INCENSE

  1. Touch the tip of your backflow incense cone to the flame
  2. Once the incense tip catches fire, remove it from the flame
  3. Gently blow the flame out, or move the incense cone from side to side to fan out the flame. Make sure the tip of the incense shows a red glow once the flame is out
  4. Place the burning backflow incense cone onto your incense holder. You should see the plume flowing out out from the bottom the cone
